Samuel (Pat) Black, III
President Erie Management Group, LLC

Samuel (Pat) Black, III

Mr. Black founded Erie Management Group, LLC (EMG) in 2004 to invest, create and manage companies with innovative products capitalizing on economic opportunities in the Lake Erie Region. It is Mr. Black’s visionary leadership that has helped to create companies such as Kold-Draft Industries, LLC (KDI) and HERO BX, LLC (HERO). KDI produces a patented long lasting ice cube that is more pure than Mother Nature. HERO is an accredited BQ9000 Biodiesel fuels Producer and Marketer with a production capacity of 45 million gallons per year, making it one of the largest biodiesel plants in the Northeastern United States. In 2015, HERO acquired a second biodiesel production facility in Moundville, Alabama, adding 10 million gallons of annual production.

Mr. Black is a graduate of Penn State University and a business owner of more than 35 years who believes in innovation, information and impact. Mr. Black is President and Treasurer of Samuel P. Black & Associates, Inc., a property and casualty insurance agency. He is also Co-Founder and President of The Black Family Foundation which is dedicated to being an active grantmaker, partner in philanthropy, catalyst, key convener, and civic leader engaged in strategic investments devoted to rebuilding and sustaining a vital, prosperous, city and region.

Since 2013, Mr. Black has maintained a second residence in Colorado Springs, CO. He is co-owner of 303 Industries in Pueblo, CO, a real estate partnership dedicated to restoration and productive reuse of key historical Pueblo properties. He is also a founding partner and investor in BlackIron Railcar, LLC, a railcar service start-up, capitalizing on Pueblo’s significant rail history, location and infrastructure.

Mr. Black brings the same focus he has shown in Pennsylvania to Colorado; revitalizing once-vibrant industrial manufacturing centers of the US with public, private and philanthropic investment in education, training, innovation and environmentally sustainable technologies.

Other regional initiatives include the Blackstone Ranch Institute in Taos, NM which provides carefully targeted amounts of seed money to strategic dialogues that are necessary to catalyze important social innovation across a range of environmental fronts of which he is the Founder and President. Mr. Black is also the Managing Member of the Blackstone Ranch, LLC. The Blackstone Ranch dedicates itself to accelerating the adaptation of best environmental practices through experimentation and testing and it is their mission to demonstrate improvements to the land while ranching and farming profitably.
