Marshall Burton
President and CEO Confluent Development

Marshall Burton

Marshall Burton serves as president and chief executive officer of Confluent Development and, in partnership with the Board, is responsible for the success of the organization. Burton assures the accomplishment of Confluent Development’s mission and vision, its relevance to the community, and the accountability of the organization to its diverse constituents. Specifically, Burton ensures Confluent Development’s fiscal, operations, marketing, human resources, technology and programmatic strategies are effectively implemented across all segments of the organization.

Burton has more than 20 years of commercial real estate experience – including development, leasing, investment and management – across all major product types throughout the United States. He co-founded Confluent Development with Celeste Tanner in 2014, with the organization providing ground-up development services on a build-to- suit and speculative basis. In April 2015, Marshall expanded Confluent Development in a merger with MVG, Inc., to form a diverse real estate investment and development platform with projects in various stages of development. Prior to establishing Confluent Development, Burton served as senior vice president and general manager for Opus Development Company, an affiliate of The Opus Group, from 2011-2014. He was responsible for managing operations and seeking new development opportunities in Denver and in the western region of the U.S. While at Opus, he also oversaw the regional organization with offices in Washington, D.C., Boston and Philadelphia.

Preceding his leadership at Opus Development Company, Burton founded the Denver office of McWhinney, a real estate development company, in 2010. As senior vice president, Burton oversaw operations for the commercial development team in the Denver metropolitan area and other strategic locations across the western U.S. Burton began with Opus Northwest, L.L.C., a full-service real estate developer, in 1996, serving as vice president from 2002-2008 and senior vice president from 2009-2010. Prior to his role with Opus Northwest, he was co-founder of Denver Capital Corporation, a multi-bank community lending organization.

Burton is a board member of Industrial Property Trust, a leading industrial REIT with more than 20 million square feet owned throughout the United States. He also served as a board member of Industrial Income Trust, which successfully completed its sale to Global Logistic Properties in 2015. Burton has served as an independent trustee on the board of trustees of DC Liquidating Trust since November 2015.

Burton is a licensed Colorado real estate broker and is active in many civic and real estate associations, including serving as the former treasurer and president of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties and as an executive committee member of the Urban Land Institute. He received his Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Denver.
