Tom Kim is the founder and managing director of r² advisors llc, a Denver-based turnaround and restructuring consulting firm. Tom is an experienced business executive who focuses on helping underperforming businesses by designing and implementing operational and financial strategies.
Tom has been working with underperforming businesses his entire career, which began in 1988. Tom founded r² advisors in 2004 to focus on middle market businesses that are facing critical operational and financial transitions. Most of the firm’s clients are businesses that seek strategies for effecting performance improvements.
Tom earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Utah and J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Santa Clara University. Tom practiced law as bankruptcy attorney, primarily working on large corporate bankruptcy matters. Recognizing that he preferred the business-side of restructuring work, Tom retired from law practice in 2001. Tom spent three years as an asset manager and originator with a Denver-based private investment company, focusing on the acquisition and disposition of distressed assets. Tom has supported various industry associations, but most of his time has been dedicated to the Turnaround Management Association (TMA). Tom served as the TMA Global President in 2013 and the Global Chairman in 2014. Kim enjoys all forms of sports and motorsports. He is a licensed private pilot, holding multi-engine and instrument ratings.
Tom is a native of California, but has resided in Colorado since 1996. After spending time on both west and east coasts, Tom is a vocal supporter of Colorado and all it has to offer. He and his family live in suburban Denver. His wife, Rebecca, serves as Chair of the Colorado Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund.
